Air Fryer Recipe for Whole Chicken

Good day everyone! Have you ever thought about making a whole chicken in an air fryer? Its entirely possible and I’m about to show you!

First let’s list your ingredients. Make sure you remove any giblets from the chicken

1.5 lb whole chicken, The weight doesn’t really matter that much, just make sure it can fit in your air fryer. If you need to reduce or increase your ingredients based on size, you may do so at your discretion.

2 Tbs Avocado oil (of course a lot of air fryers claim to be oiless, which is technically true, but for certain items you may need to add a tiny bit of oil to make sure your product doesn’t dry out).

    1 Tbs Salt

    1 Tbs ground black pepper

    1 Tbs garlic power

    1 teaspoon paprika

    1/2 teaspoon dried basil

    1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

    1/2 teaspoon dried thyme

If your chicken is already defrosted with the giblets removed, don’t forget to CLEAN THE CHICKEN! You can run it through cold water and get any gunk (if any) off of it before you begin prep. Wipe it off with a paper towel when finished.

    Step 2

Mix all of your seasonings together, turning it into a paste once you combine the oil.

Spread your ingredients all over the chicken. The chicken should look like it’s well seasoned. If it doesn’t, you may need to add more ingredients, the last thing you want is a white flavorless piece of meat in your air fryer. Make sure to spray the air fryer basket with non-stick cooking spray.

This will help later so the chicken doesn’t stick once it’s completed.

    Step 3

If you’re fast enough you can do this before you season the chicken; preheat the air fryer to 360F for about 5 – 10 minutes.

Once you have all of your seasonings place all over your chicken, it should have a reddish look because of the paprika. I have a rule of thumb, if I can’t physically see the seasoning, it wasn’t seasoned well enough. I suppose it depends on your culture and taste buds so make sure you season according to your liking.

Be careful not to make it too salty though, that’s where some people make their mistake. It’s seasoned too much or not enough, find your balance.

You’re going to want an air fryer that can support a whole chicken, below is the recommended air fryer for this task, you want at least 5.7 Qts.

OK, so your chicken is well seasoned all over, go ahead and pick it up and place it breast down in the air fryer basket. Let it cook for about 50 minutes.

After the 50 minutes are up, flip the chicken over and give it another 10 minutes. If you’re unfamiliar with chicken and you’re just not sure if its ready, you can get a thermometer. Cooked chicken needs to be 165F or higher in its thickest part before one should eat it. That reading needs to last for no less than 10 seconds.

Do not check the temperature of meat that is currently in an oven, it will interfere with your readings.

    Step 4

Enjoy the deliciousness! Hopefully this has been a very useful air fryer chicken recipe for you. Please let me know in the comments how your recipe turned out, or if you have another method for making whole chicken. I’ll be more than happy to share your recipes. Let me know what you liked or didn’t like, have a great day!

I love my air fryer and use it every night to cook dinner, but I never thought to cook an entire chicken in it though! This is a brilliant idea because I can make several meals out of one whole chicken cooked at one time. Thank you for the idea, I’ll definitely pick up a whole chicken on my next grocery run and use my jerk seasoning for flavor.

I love air fryer, it always makes me happy to see all the fat ending in the bottom of the pan, not in my stomach😆. Thank you for sharing this whole chicken recipe, it is perfect for my diet and I do not have to worry about it, just let it cook in the air fryer. One question, you said preheat at 360F, what about when we cook it? Do we keep the temperature at 360F still?

      • admin

Yes that is correct.  Cook the chicken at 360 for 50 minutes and then turn it over and cook it for another 10 minutes.  Let me know how it turns out!

That´s a real nice article, I also have some advice about to make it Before baking, the chicken should be thawed properly. Some people make the mistake of not thawing the chicken properly before baking, which leads to a recipe disaster… Not only will the meat not be cooked but there are also those who get sick after eating the undercooked meat. When you thaw, you can defrost the chicken inside the refrigerator overnight. You can also place it in a basin with cold water, which can take about 1 to 3 hours. If you don’t have that much time, use the defrost cycle of your microwave with increments of 3 to 5 minutes. After thawing, you have to cook the chicken immediately. I hope my advice will be good for all the people are going to read the comments.

It is really good advice, I had just wrote a different article about another chicken recipe where I mentioned defrosting right before I wrote this one.  It has come to my attention that I need to mention that in every single article because not all users will look at every one.  It needs to be consistent through out all of my content.

I honestly haven’t thought about about using an air fryer for a whole chicken, my thoughts were it was never going to get properly prepared but reading this article I realized using an air fryer can reduce the amount of fat, calories and potentially harmful compounds in your food. Thanks for sharing this informative article.

      Hi

Thank you for that interesting recipe for whole chicken, as it is something which I thought was impossible to do.  I am new to air frying and still unsure what can  and cannot be done in such machine. The recipe looks easy to follow and I will probably adapt it to my own preference in the near future.

I can imagine the air frier will be useful at Christmas time but I imagine a turkey will not fit in.

      Thanks

      Antonio

Thanks!  Be sure to come back to my website in the future as I will be adding more recipes specifically for air fryers

Hello Ibrahim. Nice article. I definitely like my chicken to be tasty. Good to see ingredients listed & directions on how to cook it. One question I did have is how do you know if you have enough seasoning on the chicken? The recipe looks delicious, can’t wait to try it.

I had no idea what an air fryer was but can’t wait to try one.

You can put your WASHED CLEAN finger on a section and do a quick taste.  You’ll know if you need to add more.  Be careful when seasoning though, you want a nice balance, you don’t want it to be over seasoned, but at the same time, you don’t want it to be tasteless

      hello

overall i think the website is really colourful & looks good.

content wise it is well organised & very detailed.

I think maybe if you add videos or images showing the steps mentioned would be much more useful

as currently theres way too much content & having an image or a video to relate to whats being explained would be much

      better.

      • admin

Thx, I’ll probably do that in the future as I add more content.  Feedback is always appreciated!

I just watched a video of Jamie Oliver making a delicious air fryer chicken with pasta and tomatoes and I am about to start making it…

It looks a lot like your recipe to be fair… Too bad my air fryer is kinda old and it doesn’t cook food well enough… I definitely need one those digital air fryers that you recommend.

Thanks a lot for the info!

I’ve worked in the food industry for a long time and a lot a recipes overlap.  You aren’t stealing it, because this is a recipe you’ve known your entire career.  When writing content that may run into duplicate recipes, the best thing you can do is add your take to make it as unique as possible.  Thanks for the comment!

I have an air fryer and use it often. It didn’t come with recipes only basic cooking times, so I keep a look out for recipes people like and use.

I knew you could cook a whole chicken but didn’t want to try without a tried and tested recipe. Would only get a smallish one in but will be giving this recipe a try.

Thank you, interesting post. Have shared on Pinterest, Twitter and Tumbler for others to see.

Wow thank you Linda!  I appreciate it!  I know your chicken will be delicious!

Having a family of six has sometimes put me off the idea of using anything apart from a oven. Even microwaves need to double up in our household. That said, in the last year the need to cook for everyone in one go has diminished due to the offspring growing out of coming home for tea, sad but true. Now is a perfect time to look at the possibilities of an air fryer as the quantities needed are far less. Although the one in the article has a great capacity. So much more of a healthy option, especially nowadays when we are all more conscious of the amount of ‘fat’ we consume. Running costs would appear to be lower than conventional methods also. A large whole chicken would take longer than an hour in a standard oven, gas or electric. I had a look at the ZenChef PRO XXL Fryer in more detail and it is excellent value for money. Either way I am definitely trying your seasoning recipe, that sounds delicious.

Thank you so much! I know the chicken will turn out great!  I thought that the air fryer was a great deal as well!

    12. Henry

Hi Ibrahim! This is great! Thank you for these 4 easy steps. Having this recipe is very convenient. I LOLed when you shouted: “don’t forget to CLEAN THE CHICKEN!” 🙂

I’ll also be careful to flip the chicken over (in step 3), after 50 minutes are up, and give it another 10 minutes.

Thank you very much! This indeed was a very useful air fryer chicken recipe!

Thank you, let me know how it turns out!

I haven’t used an air fryer before, so it’s great to know that when I get round to getting one, I’ll be able to do whole chickens in them too. I love the recipe you’ve shared, as anything with paprika is my kind of recipe. It’s great to know that chicken can cook so quickly in this machine. I’m wary of undercooked chicken, so thanks also for the temperature tip. If you can do a whole chicken in there, I’m curious to know what other options would be to cook in them. I might have to do a some more research. Thanks for sharing.

Very great piece of article on air fryer recipes for chicken whole. In the first instance, I didn’t know such air fryers existed. All my chicken frying and roasting has been done on my stove though it does takes time. But this seem to be a better option though. The recipes seem fair enough to me though and I’ll try it too. Also, I’ll try to checkout the suggested air fryer in this post to see if it’s within budget for me to get. Thanks for sharing

wow, fabulous, never thought I could make full chicken with my air fryer. This sis really cool because all I make with the air fryer is the regular pieces of chicken. I like full chicken thawed though so I think this will be really great. Thank you for taking out time to write out this steps. I’ll be sure to try them out and give my feedback. Happy crunching.

It’s ideal if your air fryer is 5.7QTs or more, make sure you have the space first!

    16. Cathy

Can you actually put a whole chicken into an air fryer? I’ve seen it dish out fries and the capacity looks fairly small to me. Then again, I’ve only seen it once so I could have gauge wrongly. Having said that, I am tempted to try. Anything that is homecooked and brings everyone to the dinner table is a good meal. Your recipe is doable – will definitely check out one of these units and get one before the summer ends.

this is really a discovery for me! i never knew we could fry with air! literally ! thanks so much for this. how long has this technology been up and running for? thanks again Ibrahim

The air fryer was invented by the Philips company in 2010 so if you’re looking for one, you might want to take a look at them! Air fryers have only recently began to gain any traction in the market though
